The Infinity Energy flow between Josh and Raikiri was overwhelming. With all but his final rehab session complete, the Champion was nearly at full strength a full five months after a nearly career-ending injury plagued him and kept him from serving Hoenn in the ways he wanted to. His race with Genevieve Cromwell was a good sign that the next set of sessions would be his last. There was only one thing to do that day, and that was push his arm to its limit. One no other Pokémon on his team could reach. In the future, he would solve the puzzle that kept Swift from using the Extreme Speed he was able to under kyle lopez . His body would hate him for it, but it was in his eyes necessary to be able to make deliveries anywhere in Hoenn within minutes.

"Let's go, Raikiri! We gotta get back to Rustboro to load the next shipment!" Josh spurred his quadrupedal Zeraora onward, his ARC SUIT making him look like the spitting image of the Pokémon he was seated on. "Faster!" Being able to safely give the command, despite the wave of Infinity Energy syncing the two with one another, felt liberating. Zaborg roared alongside Raikou, the Raging Bolt that the Shiny Zeraora sat astride. The electric-types looked like yellow and white comets as they whizzed around Route 104.

Rhythmic thumping of feet on the ground would fill the air. Perhaps Josh Devlin would not be able to hear over his own speedy race, but pulling from the brush came an assailant on dragon back. The Walking Wake charged forward, a Trainer astride on it's bad.[break][break]

It wouldn't be able to catch the speedy trainer, too slow for that... [break][break]

But a Sunny Day from one of it's passengers, a Flareon, helped it pick up speed. A rotten looking Leafeon shoots out a Shadow Hold at the pair of pokemon. This is followed by a boosted and boiling Hydro Steam aimed at the Gym Leader himself.[break][break]

Tempest grinned from where he was seated on the back of the pokemon.

The Raging Bolt's tromping drowned out much of the noise of Tempest Quinn 's charge, but not enough for Josh to pick up on a familiar tromping noise. Turning toward him, he saw a Walking Wake and a familiar Rocket giving chase, outrunning the electric-type thanks to their Flareon fueling their steed's PROTOSYNTHESIS. The SUNNY DAY also fueled Raikou's PROTOSYNTHESIS, making him more nimble than before. Nimble enough for Zaborg to catch back up to Josh and skillfully flick the Raging Bolt's reins to one side.

With a sliding swerve that perhaps only his Raging Bolt was capable of, the electric duo shielded their trainer from the explosion of HYDRO STEAM, but at a great price. As the boiling water rained upon Raikou, his neck stretched in a way that the Shiny Zeraora was exposed to the scalding hot vapor. Warts began to form beneath the white cat's fur. "We need to get out of here, now!" Josh ordered. "Floor it, Raikiri!" With a rattling purr, the Zeraora zipped toward their destination, only to be stopped by the SHADOW HOLD.

More than just the Walking Wake's footfalls were familiar; Josh remembered Tempest Quinn from their last tango in Dewford. "...You. Where have your people taken Captain Shalin Nariya ?"

Tempest didn't stop to ask questions. He only pushed forward with a brutal efficiency of a mission that needed done.[break][break]

His pokemon would work to push Josh Devlin and his own team for the moment.[break][break]

An eruption of Shadow Fire from the Flareon caps off the heat gathering around them, the purging black flame seeming to drip like ooze as it's sprayed from the Shadow Pokemon's mouth. The Leafeon joins her Shadow sibling by spitting out a shower of Leech Seed at the long necked pokemon blocking it's Trainer.[break][break]

The Walking Wake only shakes out her fur, snapping jaws and a quick step showing a Dragon Dance as Tempest approaches.[break][break]

"I don't fuckin' know. Not my pony show." Is all he answers, but is is truthful. Tempest knew that Shalin had been captured but it wasn't his job to mess with the prisoners.[break][break]

"You play nice and maybe you'll see your next race, Devlin."

There was something different about the way Temp answered; Josh could tell he was being truthful. From their previous times they clashed, the rider felt confident he was being truthful. Even so, he was blocking their way back to Rustboro. Trusting Zaborg to control Raikou, the badly burned feline spurred the paradox into a sprint toward the Flareon: a THUNDERCLAP that may have looked like Extreme Speed to the untrained eye.

Even with Raikou shielding Zaborg, the Zeraora's burns proved to be the white-furred feline's downfall, passing out in the saddle from the pain of many of his warts bursting into a black mess. "Zaborg!!" Josh cried, reaching for the downed Pokémon's Poké Ball... only for the switch itself to be locked in place by the SHADOW HOLD. If he wanted to save his Zeraora's life, he needed to take that Flareon down for the SHADOW HOLD to expire.

No matter their speed, high or low, the Gym Leader's Zeraora and Raging Bolt simply could not flee. "My comrades are relying on me. Whatever that thing is," he referred to the SHADOW HOLD, "end it. I'm not here to fight you. I'm here to make sure they can continue to fight. But if you're looking for trouble, then you've found it." The scintillating RAINBOW FEATHER was a light that gleamed in the shadows, the ashen Pokémon within a different kind of shadow.

If Tempest Quinn wanted to play hardball, then hardball he would get. He would match the Walking Wake's elevated speed with AGILITY of his own, building up speed by running circles against the edge of SHADOW HOLD's range.

Agni snarls and cries out, leaping to meet the clash strange Extreme Speed (Thunderclap) with her own Trailblaze. The terrain shifts under her to assist her in her running from the grass energies, the two pokemon meeting in the middle for one massive attack. Agni darts away, panting, purple corruption dripping from her jaws.[break][break]

But it had not been Agni who had started the Shadow Hold.[break][break]

Druid hangs close to Tempest, lingering in the shadows of the Walking Wake. The Shadowed Leafeon stares out with glowing red eyes as she upkeep the tangled web of the Shadow Hold against Josh Devlin and his pokemon. She chatters quietly, as if casting some dark spell from where she lurks.[break][break]

The Walking Wake digs her claws into the ground, preparing to lunge. Steam trickles out of her nose as she stares at her enemies with unrestrained hunger. It is a matching look to Tempest's own, the snarl vicious and animal on his face.[break][break]

"Why do you think I was trying to stop you, Devlin? Every second they can't fight, Rocket gains a little more ground..."[break][break]

A worn down Dive Ball is plucked from Tempest's hip, matching many of the same make. Tempest holds it aloft for a moment, then gives it a good overhanded toss to yeet it into the middle of the field. An Eevee, normal looking enough, is what comes out. The Eevee sniffs the air for a moment before baring teeth at Josh in an impish display.[break][break]

"If you think you can take me down, then bring it."[break][break]

Tempest grunts as his Sygna Suit activates properly. Steam rises from his clothes before the slow morph and distortion from the Infinity Energy. The white and blue and brown leaks over his body, a shimmering white halo of energy at his back. An Arc Suit, one of Rocket's first. It burns under the skin as Tempest syncs up with his pokemon.[break][break]

Hati's eyes seem to widen as a ring of glow surrounds them. Her 'smile' turns cruel. She takes one, two, slow and meaningful steps forward. Then she vanishes in a ping-pong of speed and light, aiming to slam a Veevee Volley into Josh himself.

The clash between Agni's and Raikou's ultrafast attacks was violent, the Raging Bolt's neck lurching backward. The violent collision ripped Zaborg's unconscious body from the saddle, knocking it into the edge of the SHADOW HOLD's range and tainting his bleached fur. Even with the Flareon's defeat, the dome remained. Raikou had little choice but to back down and protect Zaborg, at all costs. One more serious blow to the Zeraora and he was a goner.

"You won't stop me," Josh barked as he continued to build speed with Raikiri. "Captain Elise Calcifet is depending on me. Hoenn is depending on me." His own SYGNA SUIT glowed a brilliant yellow in a way that it never had before. The Symbol of the Original One materialized on his suit's gloves and helmet, the world around him seemingly slowing down as the Champion gained the reflexes of the Zeraora he rode upon. It was only those added reflexes that let the rider parry Hati's VEEVEE VOLLEY with PLASMA FISTS of his own. Were the Eevee to remain aboard Raikiri, the Gym Leader would harshly throw the thundercat's reins back and forth in an effort to dislodge her.

"You're not the only one with a special suit, either." For Josh's, too, was one of the League's first Arc Suits. Without it, the pace Raikiri ran at would have torn his body to pieces. Once he disabled that dome of Druid's, he was taking this battle to speeds perhaps only he could comprehend.

The two attacks smash together, Hati bouncing backwards. She tries to sink her claws into Raikiri to keep her grip, only to find herself flung off uselessly. She hit the ground only to jump back up and lunge at Raikiri this time without pause. Purple, flowing, draconic energy fills her body as she tries to slam herself into the other with a Dragon Hammer.[break][break]

Agni falls, but she is not the only flame shadow that Tempest has. He calls his pokemon back to keep her from further harm. It is a more tender action that someone like Josh Devlin might expect from someone like Tempest. But Tempest was someone who loved his pokemon dearly, despite what Rocket beat into his brain.[break][break]

Agni is replaced by something much worse. A ghostly Ninetails is released, snarling. She moves with a slow grace. Marian is not a pokemon who could ever hope to beat someone like Josh or his pokemon in speed....[break][break]

But that is why she would be so important here. A Drought is called by the fire type. Her nine, long tails form an arc around her, a ball of purple fox fire sitting at the tip of each one. She creeps in gentle steps as she stares down the Raging Bolt who had taken out her companion.[break][break]

"Yeah? I'll be sure to let Rocket know that."[break][break]

Tempest lets out a sharp whistle. Other than Hati, all of his pokemon freeze.[break][break]

Then they all charge. Only Druid stays behind, pressing herself flat into the dirt to keep up her spell. But the Walking Wake roars as she leaps forward, Tempest still on her back, in an aim to double team the man and his pokemon. She lashes out with Dragon Claws.[break][break]

Marian also chooses now to attack, launching a sudden and quick Solar Beam at Raikou. Her entire body shakes with power, though her steps seem slower than before.

Josh's sync with the Raikiri took the Zeraora's already fast and violent gallop to new heights. Speed that would work against the Gym Leader, his stunned body ragdolling in the saddle after being pounded deep into his seat thanks to Hati's DRAGON HAMMER. With Josh temporarily out of commission, Raikiri acted on instinct. As Tempest's Pokémon were to converge upon thundercat and rider, the Zeraora BOUNCED to avoid the mast majority of the attacks... only to bang against he top of Druid's dome, giving the Walking Wake a window to pounce.

Josh was in no condition to respond to Tempest's remark, the cocoon saddle he sat in proving to be a liability as Raikiri tumbled through the air, the DRAGON CLAW bouncing and raking mercilessly behind where Josh sat. The electric feline's yellow fur became tainted red, desperately preying upon a perhaps unsuspecting Druid from above.

Marian's sudden SOLAR BEAM, fueled by the Ninetales' dreadful heat, pierced Raikou's thundercloud, the Raging Bolt sounding like the last rumbles of thunder from a dying storm. The paradox landed with a loud thud, Raikiri now the only Pokémon that could fight back until the Champion's meaningful consciousness returned to him!

It really seemed like Tempest had the win here. Victory was almost assured.[break][break]

Perhaps this overconfidence is what undoes him.[break][break]

The slam from above ends up taking out Druid, the Shadow Leafeon frail. With her unconscious, the Shadow Hold fades. Unbeknownst to Tempest, without the hold to slow Josh Devlin down, he would face the true power from the Master of Faster. Yet, for the moment, Tempest did still seem to have the advantage regardless....[break][break]

Hati's small body shook with power, mouth opening to unleash a powerful blast of heat from her Burning Jealousy. The melting attack of crimson flame was boosted by the heat. Marian joined her, a searing Heat Wave merging to perform one powerful attack.
